Chapter 13

BY THE TIME OPIE MADE it home, we were no closer to figuring anything out. Not that any of us had actually thought we’d wrap things up that quickly. It would have been nice, though, if we could have come up with a single clue.

He found me up in Liz’s office. Yes, our bedroom had a small desk and chair, but Opie was the main one that used that. As long as Liz was kind enough to share her office, I was planning to use it. Being surrounded by books kind of helped get me in the mood to work. Who knew that would be the case? Before moving here, I’d have thought having all that reading material just feet away from me would be a huge distraction. Come to find out, they were... soothing to the soul. Even the soul that was currently working.

Bending down, he kissed the top of my head and then took a quick glance at the screen. I felt rather than saw his double take.

“What the heck are you watching?” A slight pause. “Pornography? Really?”

It would have to be watered down quite a bit, in my opinion, to be classified as simple pornography. No, what I was watching was nasty to the extreme.

“I wish. This, believe it or not, is research. The other side of witchcraft. I’m watching some of these black market witch videos I found online to see if maybe I can find someone I know.”

He took another look at the screen, even though I could tell from the tension in his body that he really didn’t want to.

“Aren’t most of them wearing masks and hoods?”

“Yup. But they don’t wear them all the time. Some of the other videos show their faces.”

“Then why are you watching this one? If you can’t identify them, why put yourself through the pain?” He hesitated a little too long. “You aren’t enjoying this, are you?”

“Goddess, no! But I have to watch it because, even with their faces covered, some of the more... interesting... participants have distinguishing marks.” I tapped the notebook beside my keyboard. “I’m making note of them.”

Some of the tension in him disappeared. “Good. Really, really good. And I’m glad that you’re handling this investigation and not me.”

“Yeah, well, if Mom is right, don’t count yourself out too soon. We just might be investigating two sides of the same case.”

He gulped. “Great. Hopefully, when we meet in the middle, we won’t have to deal with that.” He pointed to the screen.

“Totally agree.” Then I sniffed the air. It was a testament to just how much what I was watching bothered me, that I only just then noticed the delicious aroma drifting up from downstairs.

Carny’s pizza. Definitely time for a break.

I paused the horrible video, as I’d still have to finish watching it for the cause, and closed my laptop. But when I pushed the chair back from the desk and went to stand up, Opie stopped me.

Raising one eyebrow, I tilted my head at him.
